Day 8, 2022 - Castella to Etna

Today was moving day. I woke at 0540 this morning feeling kinda crappy and Beau kinda whining. As soon as he realized I was awake his tail started banging against the insides of the trailer and it sounded like someone was knocking at the door really hard. I had intended on trying to be really quiet until after 0800 as there was a family with two young kids in their tent not far from us. So much for that. I got dressed as quickly as I could and got the tail-wagger out for a walk. After that he settled back down for his first morning nap and I read for a while and enjoyed a couple cups of coffee and some cereal. We were pretty much ready to go short of connecting the trailer to the truck - the noisiest part.

First morning nap.

Runningbird sent her “I’m okay” message about 0600 signaling she was on her way again for the morning. Shortly after 0800 there was activity next door so we quickly got to business and were underway. The trip to Etna was about an hour and a half and we stopped at the Walmart in Yreka for more salad bags and a few head covers (mosquito nets) as I had given mine to Runningbird and they’re real durable and she might need another. With the rain the last few days the skeeters were out in force. At the Walmart the nets are only $1.97 but they keep them locked up. I had to wait for the right clerk with keys to get them out for me. Then another clerk had to walk them up front for me. Then a third clerk had to walk then from the secure register (#14) to the self scan registers (#1). So, yes, I asked the clerk why they kept a $1.97 item locked up. Evidently anything having to do with camping gets stolen. I think they need to raise the price to cover the additional man-hours associated with getting them to the register. I bought three of them!

We arrived at the Mountain Village RV Park where they were quite welcoming. The sites have all the hookups, cable, WiFi, a laundromat, hot showers, a dog-walk area, gas station, and mini-mart. I asked about the bakery as it looked like it was closed when we drove by. Evidently it is closed but the owners have a cafe downtown and have moved the bakery there. I believe that will be our quest for tomorrow morning. I still wasn’t feeling real great (dehydrated?) but after getting the trailer leveled and all the utilities hooked up I took Beau for an exploratory walk and then did laundry. It just seems easier to relax after all the work is done.

They use really big lawn mowers here.

And really big fuel prices. And I’m definitely not complaining.

It’s dinner time here and the clouds have moved in (see photo above) and it has gotten really windy. Only a 10% chance of rain in the next hour then just cloudy. I hope the wind doesn’t blow Runningbird and her tent away!
