Rolling Hills, pine trees, higher elevations, small bumpy roads

Professional Bike Race near Silver City, New Mexico.
It was the shortest route but probably not the fastest or smoothest. But hey, it's an adventure. We departed Lyman Lake and enjoyed the changing terrain as we moved into New Mexico towards Silver City. We passed through several small towns and crossed over the Gila River several times. It was good to see water in the river but not too much as Runningbird may have to be crossing the river many times. Near the town of Gila we were instructed off of the road a couple of times and told to wait as a professional bike race was in progress. It was the first day of a four day challenge it was cool to watch the cyclists go tearing by.
As we proceeded along we heard to final chapters of Treasure Island and I missed a turn and ended up on a bypass road for Lordsburg instead of our initial plan to visit Silver City. The road narrowed and eventually went to dirt for several miles before switching back to paved and dropping us on a primary, newly paved highway taking us to Lordsburg. Now the terrain was back to desert like, blowing sand, and flat. It was a small highway town off the I-10. We topped off with fuel and found our way to the KOA. Nothing to get excited about and the pool was empty and still closed from winter. After dropping the trailer in our assigned spot we drove "downtown" to find the Continental Divide Trail Coalition office where Runningbird would pick up her shuttle in the morning to head for the Crazy Cook monument at the border. From there we found a small grocery store and then to find the where the trail would pop her out when she came back north. From there it was back to the KOA for grilled vegetables and Cesar salad, showers, and reading before what we hope would be a good night's rest.
